One of THOSE People

Yes, it is true. I am officially one of those people! Not that many (if any?!) follow this blog...but I am one of those people who return from China....and then never blog!!! Maybe I'll get back into it, maybe I won't. But, I thought I would just put a quick post on here..maybe a pic or two to say that all is well at the Johnstone house.

Life has settled down for the most part....and tonight I have stayed up a bit late surfing adoption blogs...oh how they can suck you in! What is crazy is seeing how some people are going through the process again. John and I said we are done. Hmmmmmm...only time will tell.

Eme loves the eat. Yesterday John went to get a washcloth to wipe Jack's face up since he was done with dinner....and Eme lost it! Crying like crazy because she thought it was for her, and she wasn't done eating yet. Silly girl.

God is so good.

Normal....almost

It has been a tough week, but we are so glad to be home. My parents left last Friday morning. It was too soon as far as I'm concerned! But, they had already been away from home for three weeks and were homesick like we were so we grudgingly let them leave. I miss them so much! I felt like we didn't get to see them enough....because we didn't! Of course, they were here to take care of Jack, which they did wonderfully.

Eme seems to be doing better every day - too bad we are going to mess that up when we start the doctor's appointments this Friday. Poor girl! We are meeting with the International Adoption Clinic on Friday followed by the Cleft Team next Tuesday. I'm anxious to hear what they say about Eme's cleft palate - whether they suggest having surgery soon or waiting a couple of months. I really want her to have every opportunity for her speech to develop, but I also hate to put her through surgery so soon.

For those of you who might be wondering, Eme likes her momma just fine now. I do believe she has whined/whimpered when I have left the room several times in the past couple of days. John and I are continuing to share the duties of taking care of her, even the horrible, screaming bath times. She screams from the moment her toes touch the water until her jammies are on and you are holding her. Of course, when it is Jack's turn for a bath he throws his arms up yelling "Yay" and runs for the tub.

Having two kiddos is so strange, it really is. Didn't someone mention that having two is much harder than one, but when you have three, it is easier? I'm not sure I believe the part about three being easier....unless your first born is old enough to practically be a live-in nanny. :)

Home Sweet Home

Our travel day home seemed to last forever. But, we are so thankful that we had no flight delays or issues with our flights. Eme did really good on the 15+ hour flight from Hong Kong - there were some seriously crying babies and we were glad to not be holding one of them! Our wonderful friends, John and Darren, were nice enough to brave the weather and icky roads to pick us up at the airport AND lug our heavy bags up our snowy/ice covered sidewalk so we could get our hands on Jack! (thanks guys! we are SOOOOO lucky to call you friends!)

Jack loves his baby sister! He was so excited to see all of us. I think he has grown several inches and his eyes seem so much bigger and greener! :)

Praise the Lord we are home! Jet lag is kicking our butts today, but we are hoping tomorrow we'll be feeling better!

Hello Hong Kong!

Okay....so we are not much closer to home, but we are on our way! PRAISE GOD! Yesterday was such a tough day....all four families were given the all clear from the doctors that we were chicken pox free (enough) to travel. Of course right after that, Eme started getting some dots, lol! She doesn't seem to have any more today, so maybe it is nothing. If she has them, we'll be sure to invite everyone to a pox party at our house...do people even still do that? I just can't believe that chicken pox was a big deal....it never occurred to us that it could cause a problem. Anyway, we took the oath at the consulate and waited a very long time for Eme's visa but finally were able to get back to the hotel to pack. One of the other families flying through Chicago today was told their flight was cancelled so they have to spend an additional TWO days in Beijing waiting for another flight. Pray for them.....everyone is soooo ready to go home!

So, yesterday I had the biggest headache that just wouldn't quit! It made traveling a bear....but John was a trooper, and we were able to get packed and to the airport. Our wonderful CCAI rep, Grace, stayed with us forever at the airport to make sure we were checked in correctly with our bags checked all the way home (yes, that was scary....we might have been saying goodbye to those forever!).

Eme slept the entire way from GZ to Hong Kong with few meeps or peeps. Right now she is just making lots of noises while sitting on the bed. It's so funny because the first day she was with us she barely made any sounds at all. Now she talks all time - just like us!

I talked John into NOT posting pics so I could post them! Isn't he sweet? Of course he'll probably figure out some way to do it from the plane...illegally....ha ha....as long as it doesn't keep us from getting home!

Please pray we can get home with little trouble because of the snow storm....and that Eme is done with stinky, blow out diapers!

Our last night in GZ

I wish I could say that we have been having SOOOO much fun here that I've been unable to post. I could say it.....but it wouldn't be true. We are both sick. I felt horrible yesterday so we stayed in the hotel room almost the entire day. Eme and I both went to the clinic in the hotel and got some meds from the doctor there. I was feeling better today, but now John is worse! He has a horrible hacking cough that will just not go away. He also made a trip to the clinic for meds today. Mainly because he found out at the departure meeting that there will be temperature scanners in the airport and if you are running a fever it could keep you from traveling! Crazy.

We did venture out today. The big shopping trip to the Pearl Market was a bust! I bought Eme a jade necklace, but almost all of the stores were closed because they are wholesalers and everyone has left to go home for Spring Festival/Chinese New Year. We were walking through a multi-floor mall with tons of stores and only 3 or 4 of them were open. John said he was just waiting for the zombies to show up!

So, we are in the home stretch and trying not to worry too much about getting out of here. We should have taken our oath at the Consulate today, but they are having all the kids in our group go back to the doctor tomorrow to check for chicken pox. If we are clear, then we can take the oath and plan on leaving. Ugh. Very stressful! Eme doesn't show any signs of the pox.....please pray all of us can get out of here! All of the families are ready to go home!

Thank you for the prayers! Oh, and if you are wondering, Eme seems to be liking me just fine now! She still prefers John, but doesn't boo hoo if I'm holding her or carrying her. Yay God! I just can't wait to get her home and show her off. She is the sweetest, littlest, cutest thing ever! We are indeed very blessed. Now if only the snow and ice back in the states will stay away from the airports we'll be traveling through.... :)

We love Guangzhou!

Typical Eme pose...foot up on the table! Her hair is really short on this side - we think they shaved it to attach her IV when she had her lip repair surgery. Leslie will have to trim the other side up for us!
She is such a ham! This is in the cafe area for the breakfast buffet at the White Swan Hotel
Did I mention we love GZ? LOOK at the shoes! $6/pair....such a steal....and they are squeaky shoes, lol.
I knew she would love shoes! These are the smallest size they had...and they are still big on her...
No worries though...she can't walk yet anyway!

Back to loving Guangzhou. Maybe it's the fact that it is definitely a breath of fresh air...the air is so much cleaner here. Or, because we found a Starbucks that is less than 5 minutes away! Maybe it's because I was blessed to catch up with my RQ friend Suzie, her husband Doug and their new little boy Seth (who is super cute by the way! makes me think we need to come back for a little boy as well! John are you reading this????) - we had a chance to talk with them at breakfast this morning, they are flying home to Idaho today! Maybe we love GZ because our hotel is SUPER nice.....beautiful fountain and coy pond in the lobby.....OR because there are tons of little shops right around the corner where you can shop....OR it could just be the shoes! Yes, I bought Jack a pair, too. He is always running...and I can't wait to hear him in them! I was told the squeak is removable...I'll have to make sure I know how to do that before we leave. Anyway, I think the main reason we love GZ is that we are getting so much closer to coming home. I think the next couple of days will go quickly...between shopping and touring...and a finishing up little bit of paperwork to get Eme's visa. We had Eme's visa photo taken this morning and the medical checkup by the doctor. The doctor who examine her palate said it is not very severe. We really cannot see the cleft as much as we try! Her mouth is just so tiny, just like the rest of her! We are thinking maybe it is right behind her gumline? We'll know more once we meet with the doctor at Children's once we are home. Our current prayer request is for baby Esther as well as the other families here. We are pretty certain Esther has chicken pox. It is possible they could try to keep all of us from traveling if they think the other kids could have it as well. We are debating whether or not to get the vaccine. We were going to check with the other families to see what they are doing. So, please pray for Esther and her parents Joe and Xiaohong, they are doing their best to make it comfortable. She is having a tough time though. David and Valerie's little girl Zoe is also having some tummy trouble and Valerie has a horrible cough and congestion. I think at least one person in every family is sick! I'm hoping and praying John and Eme don't catch what I have....and I am very thankful that I don't feel worse today than I did yesterday.

I'm off to do some more relaxing....it will be interesting to see what John posts on his blog. I think he is going to put up pictures of the going home Barbie that was put in our hotel room today. Don't they know my Barbie should have dark hair like me??!!! :)

Oh, and I should mention that we are not sure how it is possible, but Eme is getting cuter every day. She was plenty cute to begin with....but as she is learning to play and we see her personality showing....we are amazed. Her expressions are priceless. And she LOVES to mimic us! If you make a noise, she'll back a noise. If you shake your head, she'll shake hers. I can't wait to see her mimic Jack.....and to hear him whine, "Mom, make Eme stop!" Ha ha ha...that will be a very good day!

Hugs to those reading!

Random post....

So, this is going to be a random post until Eme wakes up or John is out of the bathroom so I can finish drying my hair!

I had a chance to go with the mom of one of the other families to the hospital on Tuesday. She is a type 1 diabetic and her insulin pump decided it was WAY confused about being in China and stopped working. She had no long acting insulin....and of course her prescription for it wasn't about to be filled in China. So, off to the hospital we went with our guide. We were lucky enough to catch a taxi for the trip there...it only cost $1 usd...and it was so funny when she went to pay, she pulled out an extra 1 rmb and our guide, Rita, said no tip, and the driver just snatched it up. We all had a good laugh.....of course the lady cab driver wanted a tip!

We went in and Rita filled out a card.....we waited in line where you put cash on a card that they start deducting from for the services you receive. If you don't put enough on it, you have to keep getting back in line to add more $$. Very strange. We waited to see he doctor....there were about 32 rooms going at once...and we were waiting for our number to pop up. When it did, we walked back to the room...and went in while the previous patient was still talking to the doc. Um, there is NOOO HIPAA in China! We waited and waited for the patient in front of us to finish. And then Rita tried to explain what was going on.....the doctor spoke some English and did a great job communicating. There really is a ton of English everywhere in China....our guide in Beijing told us almost all students study English in school.....and it seems evident because we see English everywhere. Back to the hospital......so before we were done...the patient behind us came in....and took Rita's chair that she was standing next to...and then after another few minutes another patient came in! It was getting crowded....and SMOKEY! in there. Yes, there is smoking INSIDE the hospital! I'm thinking the only place I will be able to get away from the smoke is an airplane! :) Rita did an awesome job running around and adding money to the card and making sure my friend was taken care of. The CRAZY thing is...the visit to the doctor cost 4.5 rmb - less than ONE US dollar! But, the medicine (three pens? and needles) was about 500 rmb. I don't know what it would cost in the states...but I was glad my friend got off relatively cheap and should make it through the rest of the trip without any problems.

Okay...so I started this yesterday, lol, and I don't have much time to try to finish now. We are about to head to Guangzhou...we'll be there until Wednesday to get Eme's visa so we can come home!!! We are all homesick, big time. I think I might be getting a bit of a sore throat...yuck. Oh, well other than that John and I have both been feeling very good. I think Eme is feeling good as well...but she can't tell me because she doesn't talk! :)

I had lots of interesting things to write about when I started this post...but they have all escaped me. I will say that Eme is warming up to me a bit. She still prefers John to carry her everywhere, but she is fine with me feeding and playing with her. I think I'll be able to win her over once we get home and she sees how much Jack loves his momma! Oh do I miss my boy! Continued prayers for parents and Jack please. I know he is wearing them ragged....and huge hugs to our wonderful sitter Vicky. She had posted on FB that she was giving him extra loving while we are gone. I just miss him so much! Would give all the $$ in my pocket (and John's too!) for a hug and kiss from him!

Off to the airport we go.....the smoggy, foggy, headache-inducing airport, lol!

So John finally showed me how to post pictures....I really don't like his mac. Yes, I will take into consideration the fact that it is allowing us to skype with Jack and my parents....but I still don't like it! It makes everything hard!

Gotcha!

Going to keep this short...Eme is in her crib just talking away instead of napping. We are not sure if she napped on the way to the hotel this morning. She had about a four hour car ride.

So, we have her! John is down the hall working on paperwork right now so we can keep her, lol!

I don't even know where to start! We went to the registration office so the other families could get their kiddos this morning. It was crazy watching families being made. Nothing like seeing a first time momma hold her child! Everyone was crying...most of the babies, the parents, the nannies and John and I who were just there to video and lend support.

On the way back to the hotel, Rita (our guide/CCAI rep) told us they were 40 minutes away. We rushed back to her room to sanitize the bottle we had bought for her last night and to switch hotel rooms - Rita was able to get us a bigger room since we had one of the smaller ones and it was hard to fit the crib. So then we just sat down and waited for the call. Rita called the other families so they could meet us in the lobby of our floor. The nannies were changing Eme's diaper downstairs and would then be up. We kept staring at the elevator....and staring. And then Rita came around the other way (I still don't know where she came from lol!) and was carrying Eme. We noticed right away that she had already had her lip repair done - we were shocked because we just didn't think it would have been done. I held Eme first and she just stared at us - and pulled my hair. When John held her she playing with his beard. No tears, no fussing. We have had her for a little over two hours and still no tears. The biggest surprise - other than her lip repair - is that she seems so much younger than she is. They said she was crawling, but it doesn't look like. She really can't sit on her own, and isn't eating solid food. We don't care, mind you, but for some reason it is hard to get in the baby "mind set" - I'm sure we'll be there before the day is over!

Thanks for the prayers! Please pray for us as we are trying new formula for her - they don't have her local brand here and we are struggling a bit trying to feed her with her cleft palate and a new formula.

Eme, Esther, Norah and Zoe.....Gotcha!

We are finally at Gotcha Day! Yesterday was full of ups and downs...more downs than ups for me. The smog and ciggy smoke is making me feel icky most of the time....and just when I start feeling better....we walk into a cloud of smoke. Ugh. I told John that I'll probably need to go on the patch when we get back b/c I'll be going through withdrawals. I'm already wheezing today and we haven't left our room yet! Glad that I have my inhaler...

Eme should be brought to us at our hotel in about four hours. So, this is the last post while I still have my sanity! :) Against my better judgement I went ahead and put on mascara...so I'm sure I'll be looking like a raccoon before the day is over.

I know John mentioned on his blog a little about the other families. But, I wanted to say just a bit about them, too. Your prayers for us have been answered big time! We met up with the third couple, Joe and Shohong who is from Columbus and also adopting a daughter with cl/cp. The other amazing thing about them is that Shohong is FROM Nanyang where our daughter is! Talk about a blessing! You have no idea how comforting it is to have someone be able to get you a fork when it is three hours past lunchtime and you are starving! We met the fourth couple, Ross and Ann, and they are also adopting a little girl with cl/cp AND they have already BTDT (been there done that) with their daughter Lizzie who they adopted two years ago.

The other three families will be getting their girls at the registration office this morning. We will be tagging along so we can take pictures/video for them of their Gotcha time. I am so excited and blessed to get to see Valerie and Shouhong become first time mommas! God is so good!

Next time I post (or John posts for me) we'll make sure to put some pictures. You can always go to his blog spazbro and link to the other pictures there as well.

So, after about 52 months of waiting for our daughter....only 4 more hours to go!

Touring Beijing

So, dear hubby is doing a much better job at blogging than I am. Turkey. Maybe it's because he chose to blog yesterday afternoon while I chose to nap! I will try to post pics, but I'm not sure where John put them on this laptop. You can refer to his blog - he has a link to where he posted all the pics on facebook.

We had a great breakfast yesterday morning. I told John that "man cannot live on bread alone" but I would be willing to try living on the all the yummy pastries we had! THEY WERE SO GOOD! I may just have to try to take a picture of them this morning.

We met up with one other couple and spent the day with them and our guide Forrest. We went to Tiananmen Square and then onto the Forbidden City. Although I didn't catch anything, Forrest basically explained how there was line that went through the central heart of China and Beijing. On this line is the mausoleum of Chairman Mao (he is still entombed there in a crystal coffin today) the Peoples Monument (which is dedicated to all who have fallen in the wars - Chinese or not), the Flag, and then straight through the Forbidden City. It is hard to grasp all of the history we were exposed to in a single day. I agree with John that our favorite part of the day was eating at the house of a local Beijing family and then seeing a very traditional house in Beijing. I can't quite recall the exact numbers, but our other guide said that house would sell for $100000 rmb per sq meter and it was 1000 sq meters in size. I'll have to work on that conversion....but basically the house was seriously pricey. I think due mostly to location and it is actually a protected historic house. Much like here in the states, all the improvements have to be done according to the original architecture of the home.

We had a bit of a misunderstanding last night. We thought we were going out to dinner and a show, Chun Yi The Legend of Kungfu. We had the show right, but we were suppose to have eaten dinner before we met at 6:30pm. We had popcorn during the show...and a late dinner back at the hotel around 10pm. We are going to pay more attention today!

I think we are going to the Great Wall and then the Jade market. It should be a shorter day. I'm not sure if we are meeting up with any other couples or not. I thought all four of us were adopting from Henan, but David and Valerie are in the traditional program and not going to Henan. I certainly hope we have at least one other family with us on Gotcha Day! Forrest mentioned yesterday there would be one couple that was with us the entire time, but we have not met them yet.

Can I just say I'm ready to get our baby girl and come home? Jetlag hasn't been too horrible, but I just don't feel quite right most of the time. I think some of it is due to the "smoke" van that takes us everywhere....it puts me in a haze the second we get in! Needless to say, I'm hoping the Great Wall isn't too far away!

Thanks for the prayers! Only two more days to go before we get Eme! Yea!

Beijing...

Well, we are here. It is about 5:30am (4:30pm est). The flight was the longest ever - neither of us were able to sleep much, but the time did go by fairly quickly. There were a lot of people on the flight, but we had three seats to ourselves which helped. We arrived around 2:30pm and had to wait in line for a long time to have our passports checked in the "foreigners" line. We spotted our guide right after walking through customs and he took us to the van that would take us to the hotel. The hotel is nice! Great pillows! We walked around the hotel a bit, but decided to skip dinner and just go straight to bed around 5:30pm. We both slept well until about midnight, but then had to make ourselves sleep (isn't that horrible, lol!). I actually went down to run in the fitness center, but the lady in there pointed to the sign saying it didn't open until 6am. I thought I better run today because I might not be up to it again. We are meeting our guide and group in the lobby at 9am to start sight-seeing. We are excited to meet the rest of our group!

Our guide had our China cell phone sent to his place because they wouldn't deliver it to the hotel. We haven't been able to skype with Jack yet, but I'm hoping we can do that later this morning.

Some other thoughts:
Lots of honking and beeping from the cars, not lots of blinker usage.
The city seems so huge...of course I was exhausted and don't remember much of the drive here!
I am so paranoid about accidentally drinking the water, but so far so good.
I'm not sure if it's smog....John thinks it's cigarette smoke, but the air is very different here.
Can't believe we are really here!

We are on our way!

It was tough leaving....getting ready and packed up and actually leaving Jack at the house. Thanks so much to Steve, Auntie C's hubby for driving us since she wasn't feeling well (hope you are better soon!) We are down in Columbus for the night to catch our early 6:40am flight up to Newark. We have a direct flight to Beijing leaving at 11:50am. It is still unreal that we will spend over half of an entire day...almost 14 hours in the air! I just don't know what I think about that. John and I do not particularly like to fly...but, I know we will get through it.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I talked with Mom and Dad earlier and Jack is doing great. I hope the weeks pass quickly for him and right around the time he starts wondering where we are, we'll be home!

We plan to post some pictures of our touring in Beijing and then Sunday we will be heading to our sweet girl's province. Can't wait!

John said he will be blogging too (turkey...but since he is a bigger techie, I guess it's okay) so you might check out HIS blog at www.spazbro.com if it seems like I have been lazy and haven't posted.

Better get to bed....3:30am is going to come early!

Taking Volunteers for Suitcase Sitters!

We were up late last night trying to get packed. It was more of a "prepack" to see if we can get all of our junk in our suitcases. It went okay....but around 1:30am we just gave up and went to bed. I'm less worried about it all fitting and more worried about how much it weighs!!! We have until 4:30pm to make it work....that's when Auntie C will be picking us up to take us to the hotel at the airport for the night.

Unreal that this time next week the adoption will be final and Eme will be ours!

Blessed

So the sweet ladies from my bible study this past summer had a surprise baby shower for me last night. They were so thoughtful in their gifts! Besides clothes and cute girly stuff, they also gave us snacks, books and other things for our trip. We had fun playing some Wii dance game (it's really a guise for exercising - I thought I needed my inhaler when I was done!). I am blessed to know such wonderful people!

My parents should be crossing into Ohio soon...arriving this afternoon. I still have quite a bit of things to finish up at work, but I'm confident I can get it all done or pass what is not done off to someone else before I leave. That is if I stop blogging and head into work!

I'm so excited to start packing! I hope I still feel that way once I see how much my suitcase weighs!

"Well, hello there China!"

Us...big plane....January 19th! We received our final travel details today. Gotcha day will be January 24th...and the adoption will be official the next day! John and I are THRILLED! And, very anxious about getting everything done and packed so we can leave. Packing will be no fun since we will have cold weather and mild weather to pack clothes for....oh well, everyone always says not to overpack, but I always do. :)

As excited as I am about getting to China, I am even more excited to get back home and start "real life" with our daughter. I may need someone to medicate me to get me to leave Jack next week. I know he just can't go with us....but it is going to be SOOOOO very hard to leave him behind.

Mom and Dad are ready to start their drive this way on Sunday so they can see us a for a bit before we leave. I hope the 4+ inches of snow today will be it until AFTER we fly out (after we are gone, they are on their own with the shovel, he he he!).

Travel Approval and Consulate Appointment!

The rumors were true! We received our TA late yesterday afternoon. And, our CA was confirmed for 01/31/11. We are still waiting to find out a couple of things before we can book our flights. We are hoping to leave on 01/19 and return on 02/02.

Excited and nervous! I'm a little bummed since most of my RQ friends have earlier CA dates so we will not be traveling at the same time. Hopefully we can still meet up with some of them in Guangzhou. But, I am thankful for the extra time to have things finished up at work and leaving later allows for that.

Sweet girl, we will be there soon!

Your prayers are soooooooo appreciated!

Rumors...

Well, someone heard that there was a big batch of TAs mailed out from China on Friday so the agencies should have them Monday. It doesn't mean our agency will get any...or if they do, that ours will be one of them. BUT WE ARE HOPING! A friend who is with our agency and also adopting from Henan mentioned there is a travel group leaving on Jan 12th. That is only 10 days away people! I just don't know how we will get everything done in time to leave...especially at work. Guess I should be working on my to do list rather than searching for rumors, ha ha.

John and I did make a big shopping trip on Friday to buy things we need for the travel. And, yesterday I went crazy shopping for clothes for Eme. But, in my defense, we didn't really have anything for her and so much was on sale!

Our pastor's message this morning was from the absolute perfect verse. Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (This means CHINA!)

My dear friend Dawn invited me to be part of Beth Moore's Siesta Scripture Memory Challenge for 2011. http://blog.lproof.org/2010/12/siesta-scripture-memory-instructions.html I was a bit disappoint that we wouldn't actually be napping while memorizing, but I still agreed to do it. We are committing to memorize a verse of our choice on the 1st and 15th of each month and post it on the blog. I posted Eccl 3:11 yesterday. "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." This verse spoke to me in that I think we cannot even begin to grasp all that God is doing by bringing Eme into our family. I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

Hope everyone is enjoying a restful Sunday afternoon nap. Jack is not one of them - not even an hour, little turkey. So, he will be running some errands with me at Walmart and Toys R Us while John finishes up his nap.
